True Health Tuesday - Allergies Everywhere 11/18/2009
Have you noticed that lately it seems that everyone has allergies to something? I can remember growing up and the kids with allergies were the exception, not the rule. Today, it seems that most kids have some kind of allergy to something. A lot of these are to things most of us never thought people were allergic to in the recent past. From nuts, gluten, pets, dairy products, etc., etc., it seems the list is ever expanding. The big question is WHY? Why, with all of the advancing, modern technology, knowledge and research at our disposal, are we suffering from an ever increasing number of allergies? In the past hundred years or so, we as a society have been focused on cleanliness and germ free living. In light of some of the major health problems that used to plague us many many years ago this made great sense. The germ (variola virus) that caused smallpox, for example, was transmitted through contact with infected objects, person to person contact and through the air. Thus, being sure to clean objects, wash hands, shower, etc., became very important in limiting smallpox exposure. The same is true of numerous diseases that are spread through viruses and bacteria (germs). It is important to remember, however, that not all germs are deadly, or even bad! Our efforts to clean everything and eradicate germs has spun out of control in the late 20th century and continues today. Almost unavoidable is the soap that "kills 99.9% of common germs." Try finding some non-anti-bacterial hand soap at the supermarket...it's almost impossible. This is making our immune systems, for lack of a better term, wimpy. We are not exposed to the everyday germs that help us build a robust immune system. When we encounter a serious threat to our health, our immune systems are not prepared and cannot fight it without outside intervention (in the form of modern medicine). The same holds true for many of the allergies we have been seeing pop up in recent years. Now, don't get me wrong, there are legitimate allergies out there that are serious. However, don't just assume you have an allergy to something without talking to your healthcare professional about it. The reason is, our kids are so overprotected that many of the things that they are now allergic to are simply due to a lack of exposure. Our homes are so clean that we are not exposed to things that will help us build our natural tolerance and strong, healthy immune systems. We are no longer working out in the fields, hunting for our food, keeping pets as much, etc., which used to grant us an extra strong immune system because of regular exposure. Now, at the first sign of dirt, we vacuum everything clean, wipe our kitchen counters with lysol wipes, avoid peanuts and dairy products because we heard on the news about the sensational allergic reactions others have had, and play video games in our clean homes instead of going outside and getting dirty! It's a recipe for, as I stated earlier, wimpy immune systems. The solution to this is simple. So simple it's slightly amazing! Let your body do what it is designed to do!!! Go out, get dirty, roll around with your dog, avoid germ killing soap. Don't be afraid of everything you hear and read about in the media. Understand that your body and immune system is made to fight, and that the more it fights, the stronger it gets. Get adjusted by your chiropractor regularly, so that your body's nervous and immune system can function optimally and remain strong. Don't let yourself have a wimpy immune system! Have you been hearing a lot about vitamin D lately? I seems that vitamin D supplementation is all the rage right now! Why is this? Let's take a look at a couple of reasons and see if supplementing your diet with vitamin D would benefit you. First, recent research has begun to show that many disease process accompany low vitamin D levels. Because of this, it is assumed that supplementing with vitamin D may provide some benefit and protection. Lately, it seems that a lot of healthcare professionals are waking up to the fact that vitamin D has a large role in supporting your immune system. Let's take a look at the logic behind supplementing your diet with vitamin D and seasonal illnesses such as the flu. Vitamin D is produced by our bodies naturally when we are exposed to the sun. Cold and flu season is during the fall to early spring, when we spend much more time indoors, thus producing less vitamin D naturally. Because of this, it seems logical to assume that supplementing with vitamin D, especially the cold winter months, is an excellent idea. What type of vitamin D should you be taking? Vitamin D3 is the type that is produced naturally through sun exposure to the skin. There are different opinions on if D2 is as effective as D3, but I'd recommend playing it safe and using D3 only. Last night I was watching the ten o'clock news when a segment titled the "Swine Flu Survival Guide" came on. I was curious as to what the medical doctor interviewed for this segment would have to say. My jaw dropped at his first recommendation. He says that one of the worst parts of swine flu is the fever that accompanies it. His recommendation was not only to control the fever through OTC medication, but to actually combine two different fever reducers and rotate them. More specifically, what he said was this. Take Tylenol (acetaminophen) every 6 hours as directed on the label, and also take ibuprofen every 6 hours as directed by the label. What he said you should do, to double the effects, is 3 hours after taking Tylenol, take ibuprofen. Then 3 hours after you take ibuprofen, take another dose of Tylenol, and so on. He said nothing of doing this to control discomfort or the aches associated with the flu, only to reduce the fever. This was just shocking to me! How can a medical doctor, who has enough cultural authority to appear on the ten o'clock news in Denver, but that misinformed on the role fever plays in the immune response. Here's what I mean. Fever is NOT the illness. There is no reason to fight a fever. It is your body's immune response to the virus or bacteria that is the true illness. The fever is what your body is doing to kill off whatever it is that is causing the true illness. Why would you want to fight that? Think about it logically for a minute. If your body has the ability to fight off whatever is infecting it, and you suppress the means by which the body does this, what do you think happens next? Aren't you then set up to need the "cure" of anti-biotics/anti-virals? Wouldn't it seem that you would then be in for a longer period of illness? The logic and goal behind reducing a fever is simply not sound. One small caveat...there is a time when medical management of a fever is necessary. This is when the oral (taken by the mouth) temperature gets to 104.6 degrees F. This is called hyperpyrexia, and is associated with a positive feedback loop that cannot be broken without outside intervention. The best thing to do once you've got the flu is to get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids, and let the fever do it's job! Having a fever is a sign that you are perfectly healthy, and that your body is doing exactly what it is designed to do. Saturday Summary 11/10/2009
